Turning from the burbs to Detroit living

by Fuzzytek on Aug.29, 2010, under reflections

I have to admit I was a kid from suburbia, then the chance for college came along. I told my parents the best spot for me to take on going after a career in this new information technology thing was at Wayne State University. I stayed in the metro area at a school that gave me a slice of what urban life really is about.

This post I started a while ago and didn’t get completed. It is one of those posts that is going to evolve over time. I can’t squeeze information about a life of nearly fifty years in the wink of an eye. You’ll find some moments of life that are well just a moment and I’m preferring to put them in a single blog entry than string them out all over.

Commuting To Wayne State University (1979-83)

Granted I commuted from Royal Oak. It was always an interesting situation when the car broke down near campus – my parents really didn’t like coming south of 8 Mile Rd. When the car I drove broke down I’d take the SEMTA bus into Detroit. One of those break-downs totaled the car when I rear-ended a trailer PARKED under a train overpass with the back gate OPEN. It was pitch black dark inside in a dark place and my windshield was glazed over from highway spray and insufficient washer fluid. I didn’t even see it until the shadow of the overpass came across the windshield of the car. I thanked God I had my safety belt as I hit. It held me in my seat even as I ducked seeing the opening of the trailer at the level of the windshield. Trucks are required to have a bar beneath the trailer to prevent cars from going under… that bar acted like a spring with the Nova traveling at 35 mph it bounced back 6 feet at least from the back of the trailer. Yes I am faithful to wearing a safety belt. I walked away from the accident got to French class (about a mile down the road) and told my parents the car was totaled, unsure of what to do next.

First Job in New Center (1983-84)

My first work assignment was for a Southfield based IT consulting company “Symcon” and I was of he 1st 13 employees hired. The assignment was subcontracted to Arthur Anderson at the MESC to rewrite the unemployment compensation system. It wasn’t long after taking the job that I bought my first new car – a 1984 Honda CRX and it was getting about 45 mpg – first year for that model from Honda and I saw it at the Auto Show and made my order the following week.

Guilty Innocence – get a grip on Domestic Violence

by Fuzzytek on Aug.15, 2010, under activism, film, focus

Some will recall the film Allure that I played a leading role in, which was released in April 2010. This was one of the first ventures for Rivervision Investment Group – a nonprofit organization which is assisting victims of domestic violence find assistance and solutions. I want to thank Byron and Lanesia for that opportunity.

Swiftwinds Media held a preview showing of the film Guilty Innocence, which follows the story of a woman who takes the life of her abuser. The showing was on August 12, 2010 at the Main Art Theater, 118 N Main St, Royal Oak 48067. Unfortunately my finances prevented me from attending. Swiftwinds Media has a number of public service announcements on YouTube which the video link will take you through.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence is an often under-discussed issue in society today. Why is it hidden? Often the victims are made to feel that they are the cause by their abuser. Threats are made if the situation is revealed, and sometimes the mere suggestion of retaliation is enough to keep one living in fear. The position of being a victim is disabling in so many ways. Every moment your psyche is in fight or flight mode and the fear of consequences. Consequences that are often bigger than self, sometimes involving loved children and other dependents.

Jun 16: Watusi High @ Cass Cafe

by Fuzzytek on Jun.20, 2010, under PhotoBlog, event photos

I hadn’t really planned the night out. I knew Ulysses had a night @ Cass Cafe coming up, though it slipped my memory. I sent him an email in the afternoon and his reply was – “headed to Cass Cafe to play”. I got a bit more completed from this list of activities to complete. Got a ride with Roger over to Cass Cafe. Ulysses, Jay, Mannie and friends were upstairs waiting for their time when we arrived. Specials on Motor City Brewery’s Nut Brown and Ghettoblaster were just $2 a glass. I stuck to the Nut Brown through the night and consumed a few more than I usually would (typically 1-3). Just before the kitchen closed at 9:30 ordered a Wild Mushroom Stew on Oat Bran Muffin, plus a basket of Onion Rings.

Got to know a few new friends and saw people I’ve known for several years. I’ve got to get in touch with Angelique about makeup for Sat June 26 photoshoot (and confirm that with the actress). There was some buzz exchanged regarding the upcoming US Social Forum next week. I hope to create time to be there shooting and listening to some of the sessions.

Slideshow

Some of the photos taken through the night were simply experiments with the camera and playing with long exposures.

I NOT ONLY HAVE THE RIGHT TO STAND UP FOR MYSELF, BUT I HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY. I can’t ask somebody else to stand up for me if I won’t standup for myself. And once you stand up for yourself, you’d be surprised that people say, “Can I be of help?” ~MAYA ANGELOU (contemporary U.S. writer and poet)

SELF-SUFFICIENCY… HAS THREE MEANINGS. The first is that one should not depend upon others for one’s daily bread. The second is that one should have developed the power to acquire knowledge for oneself. The third is that man should be able to rule himself, to control his senses and his thoughts. ~ VINOBA BHAVE (Indian social reformer, 1895~1982)

Communiqué of NEW GUARD of DETROIT: SPEECH (5/31/10~6/4/10)~Raison d’être

YOU CAN CAGE THE SINGER
BUT NOT THE SONG. ~HARRY BELAFONTE (comtemporary U.S. singer and actor)

Those who won our independence believed that the final end of the State was to make men free to develop their faculties… They valued liberty both as an end and as a means. They believed liberty to be the secret of happiness and courage to be the sercet of liberty. They believed that freedom to think as you will and to speak as you think are means indispensable to the discovery and spread of political truth; that without free speech and assembly discussion would be futile; that with them, discussion affords ordinarily adequate protection against the dissemination of noxious doctrine; that the greatest menace to freedom is an inert people; that public discussion is a political duty; and that this should be a fundamental principle of the American Government. ~ LOUIS D. BRANSEIS (U.S. Supreme Court associate justice, 1856~1941)

If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don’t believe in it at all. ~ NOAM CHOMSKY (contemporary U.S. linguist and political activist)

Though the whole world grumble, I will speak my mind. ~ CICERO (Roman stateman, first century B.C.)

The weight of the universe is pressed down on the shoulders of each moral agent to hold him to his task. The only path of escape known in all the worlds of God is performance. You must do your work, before you shall be released. ~ RALPH WALDO EMERSON (U.S. philosopher, 1803~1882)

Rights that do not flow directly from duty well performed are not worth having. ~ MOHANDAS K. GANDHI (Indian spiritual and national leader, 1869~1948)

What that energy, which is the life of genius, above everything demands and insists upon is freedom; entire independence of all authority, prescription and routine- the fullest room to expand as it will. ~MATTHEW ARNOLD (English poet and critic, 1882~1888)

Without freedom, no art; art lives only on the restraints it imposes on itself, and dies of all others.

There is not a single true work of art that has in the end added to the inner freedom of each person who has known and loved it. ~ ALBERT CAMUS (French writer, 1913~1960)

I have steadily endeavored to keep my mind free so as to give up any hypothesis, however much beloved [and I cannot resist forming one on every subject], as soon as facts are shown to be opposed to it. ~CHARLES DARWIN (English naturalist, 1809~1882)
